چکیده
Abstract. Groundwater table dynamics extensively modify the volume of hyporheic zone and rate exchange processes. Understanding effects daily groundwater fluctuations on tightly coupled flow heat transport within zones is crucial for water resources management. With this aim in mind, a physically based model used to explore responses varying fluctuation scenarios. The different timing amplitude drawdowns under gaining losing conditions are explored influenced by natural flood events diel river temperature fluctuations. We find that both play important roles determining spatiotemporal variability rates, exfiltrating fluxes, mean residence times, denitrification potentials. present substantially distinct impacts or conditions. drawdown has direct influence rates buffering capacity thermal disturbances. How does subsurface characterization affect simulations of hyporheic exchange?
We investigated the role of increasingly well-constrained geologic structures in the subsurface (i.e., subsurface architecture) in predicting streambed flux and hyporheic residence time distribution (RTD) for a headwater stream. Five subsurface realizations with increasingly resolved lithological boundaries were simulated in which model geometries were based on increasing information about flow...
متن کامل113: Hyporheic Exchange Flows
Water having entered a stream channel from the surrounding catchment may continue to have connections with the catchment. In the stream’s hyporheic zone, water “in the channel” exchanges with “groundwater” in the bed of the stream. Hyporheic exchange flows typically occur at scales small relative to the length and volumetric transport characteristics of the stream. Nevertheless, it is well docu...
متن کاملOn the Importance of Considering Channel Microforms in Groundwater Models of Hyporheic Exchange
The infiltration of stream water in the sediment and its return to the stream—a process known here as hyporheic exchange flows (HEF)—is a critical control of the structure and functions of the stream ecosystem. River restoration programmes will increasingly require quantitative methods for evaluating this influence. Previous studies have already shown the potential of numerical groundwater mode...
متن کاملSnowmelt-induced diel fluxes through the hyporheic zone
[1] Snowmelt processes result in diel fluctuations in streamflow and stream stage that propagate into riparian aquifers and cause a daily pumping of the hyporheic zone. This diel pumping was observed in stream stage and water table records collected in Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park, California. A model was developed using Fourier analysis to represent the stream stage fluctuations an...
متن کاملHow the Nonextensivity Parameter Affects Energy Fluctuations
In this article, the effect of the nonextensivity parameter on the energy fluctuations of nonextensive systems is studied in two different versions of the Tsallis statistical mechanics. Once a general expression has been reported for the energy fluctuations in the second version (Tsallis work in 1988), the energy fluctuations of an ideal gas and a harmonic oscillator are studied in the second a...
